Some Thoughts on Things
There are some times where you have some thoughts (mostly random) that have been on your mind or recently came into your mind. Some can be good and some not so good but it is good to get them out. I am sure not everyone will care about these thoughts but I like to get them out. It’s kind of like my friends and wife have made a running joke about the amount of pet peeves that I have. Apparently, I have a lot of them. I guess people just give me these thoughts. Not sure who that says more about, but I believe it is more on society as a whole.
First, this is not an earth-shattering thought, but baseball players literally play almost every day from April through September. All of a sudden, we get to the playoffs and they can’t play every day. The Yankee and Rays are playing in the American League Division Series and through no fault of the teams, Major League Baseball had the great idea to play game one on Saturday and then give them the day off on Sunday, just because they did not want to have four games played on both days. I am sure it is more that they did not want the Yankees and Rays to go up against the NFL, Sunday Night Football game. Not a bad idea but how about we do it like every other sport does. One conference (in the NHL and NBA) starts one day and the other conference starts the next day. This way when there is a travel day you still have one of the Leagues playing. I know that is a novel concept.
Second, as most people know I am a Giants fan. I know that they won on Sunday (and in first place by themselves although I don’t expect it to last) and did score a decent number of points but let’s be honest, they did not look good in doing so. The Giants lost their starting quarterback for the season in game 2 against the Rams and they thought their backup would be able to come in and continue moving the ball. He came in last season and played ok albeit in an already lost season. The Giants even gave him a contract extension and then he has to play this season and he has looked like absolute poop. So much so that the Giants went out and traded a fifth-round draft pick to the Minnesota Vikings for J.J. McCarthy who fell out of favor in Minnesota.
Third, I am training for the New York City Marathon to be run on November 1. When someone is out running, please provide them the right of way. If you are at an intersection and see a runner do not continue to move or make a turn as the runner is hitting the intersection. The number of times I have gotten to a driveway exit or the corner of a street and someone sees me yet they continue to move and almost hit me is countless. I do appreciate the drivers who move over as I am running down a street to make sure they are far enough away from me so they do not hit me. I feel I do my best to be as considerate as possible to drivers but sometimes these people have no respect for people who are running or riding bikes down the street.
Lastly, I was told yesterday, but did not see until this morning that a college colleague had passed away. Shaun Ganley was only 45 years old and he passed away from pancreatic cancer. You never want to see anyone pass from cancer but Shaun was way too young for this to happen to him. Life is very unfair in this way and will never make sense. I am not going to pretend we were best friends but we were at Oswego for a year together and I would always see Shaun at WTOP, the campus TV station. He was the epitome of a hard worker who was willing to do anything and everything. It actually wasn’t until after college where I actually had hung out with him a little more. I had seen him in Pittsburgh a couple of times, because he was working there as was another friend of ours Maria Leaf. We all went to a Pirates-Mets game. We would occasionally speak on social media about the Mets or his beloved Jets as he would bemoan their lost seasons and even worse having to live in Boston being a Jets fan. Just for Shaun the Jets finally intercepted a ball on Sunday, for the first time since 2024. I am sure we all enviously lived vicariously through Shaun’s many trips he would take all over the world.

On our podcasts and blogs, we decided we would have a policy of no cursing, but in this instance, I am breaking our rules and saying FUCK CANCER!!!! Rest in peace, Shaun.
