Remembering Diogo Jota

It’s not been very long since the shocking news of Diogo Jota’s passing made its way across the globe. Some time has passed where we can begin to make sense of what happened. Although I’m not sure the world is making any sense at all any more for more reason’s than Jota’s passing. And I’m sure I’m going to be repeating a lot of what has already been said about a person that was great on and off the pitch.

Parents have lost their child, a wife has lost her husband and the children have lost their father. They were all together not long ago. In May, Jota helped Liverpool clinch their second title in 5 years. He also helped Portugal win the UEFA Nations League. These were happy moments and that is how he will be remembered. He will also be remembered for scoring an all important goal in the Merseyside Derby against Everton to inch closer to the title very late in the season.

Liverpool have opted to retire the number 20 in honor of Diogo Jota. There are murals planned near Anfield as well. His song will be sung, I’m sure, throughout the season by the supporters.

My favorite memory of Jota will be him celebrating a penalty kick vs Leicester City in the 2022 Carabao Cup to send Liverpool through to the next round. A close second was this past season’s goal vs Everton late in the season.

We should also not forget that his brother Andre Silva also passed away in that accident. Yes, the parents lost two of their boys.

I know it’s cliche to say, but don’t sweat the small things in life. Live every day as if it is your last day. Hug your kids, hug your parents, tell the people you care about that you love them. I know it’s cliche, but these things matter. You never know when it’s your last day.

He will forever be our number 20. Just a lad from Portugal…..better than Figo don’t you know…..oh, his name is Diogo.
